ABOUT THE PENGUIN PROJECT
Established in 2004, The Penguin Project has evolved into a National program, with Chapter sites throughout the United States. The program provides a supportive environment for children with disabilities to explore their creative talents and perform in a modified Broadway musical. It has also demonstrated that participation in the performing arts has therapeutic value by enhancing social interaction, communication skills, self-confidence, and self-esteem.
The project is designed to immerse people with special needs and their families into a safe, supportive, and inclusive theatre environment. Peer mentors and audience members gain skills, empathy, and knowledge in interactions with all members of our community, breaking down stigma, discomfort, and fear. Children and young adults with special needs have the opportunity to learn about theatre and to showcase their talents, but they also become teachers and friends to all of those around them. The process creates a supportive, inclusive “comfort zone” where we learn about one another and create a special family that extends well beyond the stage.
